We’ve always been obsessed with data. Whether it’s IoT sensor networks, soil parameters, vehicle telematics, or analysing the latest census, we have been collating and publishing Isle of Man data long before the current AI wave took hold.
Today, we are moving beyond static reports. We are excited to announce the launch of Smart Island – a unified platform designed to turn the Island’s data into actionable, AI-driven intelligence.
Beyond the Dashboard: A Living Data Ecosystem
Smart Island is more than just a labour market tracker. It is an ambitious project to consolidate the Island’s disparate datasets – economic, environmental, and social – into a single, modern platform.
By leveraging the latest Generative AI models (including GPT 5.4), we aren’t just showing you “what” the data is; we are providing AI-driven insights and strategic advice on what that data means for the future of our community. This advice is generated entirely by AI Agents, relying on data-sources collected by AI Agents – all without human intervention.

Key Features of the Smart Island Platform
The platform is built on a modern tech stack (hosted in Azure) and was consolidated using Claude Code to ensure a seamless experience across these core areas:
- AI Economic Observatory: Real-time analysis of the IOM job market, mapping vacancies against AI automation risk, skills demand, and salary benchmarks.
- AI Advisors & Agents: Dedicated digital advisors for Careers, Economics, and Strategy. These agents use the latest LLMs to interpret live data signals and offer strategic insights.
- Model Context Protocol (MCP) Endpoints: A first for the Island – MCP allows your own AI tools (like ChatGPT or Claude) to connect directly to Smart Island data for real-time querying.
- Public Data APIs: We are offering interactive REST APIs (via Scalar) to allow developers and researchers to build their own applications on top of our enriched datasets.
- IoT & Environmental Integration: Bringing our existing expertise in IoT and sensor data into the same interface to provide a holistic “Digital Twin” view of the Island. We have dozens of weather stations, rain gauges and other sensors deployed around the Island. These will be incorporated.

Bridging the Data Gap with AI
The Isle of Man has historically faced challenges with fragmented or non-machine-readable data. Smart Island solves this by using AI-powered scrapers and enrichment workflows to turn public information into structured, high-value intelligence.
We believe in “practising what we preach.” This entire platform was built using the very AI tools we help our clients implement. From our custom SOC arbitration system for job classification to the automated, agentic weekly market briefings, Smart Island is a showcase of how AI can augment human capability.
Skills & Occupational Frameworks
We are also exploring the development of an AI-driven skills taxonomy that adopts, rather than attempts to recreate, existing standards. Instead of introducing yet another framework, our approach is to use AI to harmonise and extend established models – creating a unified layer that can interpret and translate between them.
This includes cross-walking between frameworks such as ESCO, DigComp, e-CF, the UK Government AI Skills framework, the World Economic Forum Global Skills Taxonomy, Lightcast Open Skills, and research-led initiatives from organisations such as the Alan Turing Institute and UNESCO. By mapping between these standards, we can ensure consistency while enabling more flexible, real-world application of skills data.
The aim is not to replace existing frameworks, but to make them more usable – bridging the gap between structured taxonomies and the dynamic, evolving nature of real-world jobs.
This transition is not just a workforce challenge but a leadership and human one. Without deliberate investment in coaching, leadership development, and the ability to guide people through uncertainty, even the best-designed skills programmes will fail to translate into real-world change
External Datasources
Smart Island is built on a combination of locally sourced data and internationally recognised datasets. Where possible, we rely on authoritative, publicly available sources to ensure transparency, credibility, and reproducibility of our analysis.
Key external data sources include the Isle of Man Government’s open data and statistics platforms, which provide foundational datasets on population, employment, earnings, and economic performance. These are complemented by global AI research datasets, such as the Anthropic Economic Index, which help quantify how different occupations are exposed to AI and automation.
By combining local context with global benchmarks, Smart Island is able to provide a more accurate and meaningful view of how emerging technologies are likely to impact the Isle of Man specifically.
A Roadmap for the Economy
Our roadmap includes onboarding even more datasets – from census deep-dives to local sentiment analysis – ensuring Smart Island remains the definitive source for IOM intelligence.
While the platform is technically in beta, we are opening it up to the public now. We believe that when people have access to clear, data-driven insights, they make better decisions for the Island’s future.
